Devri Walls: Beats and micro beats: Bring your readers to the edge of their seats
In a novel, pacing is everything. Bad pacing, or not using beats correctly, can destroy an otherwise nicely written book. But even more powerful than a beat itself, is a micro beat. A micro beat is where a scene slows down. Instead of moving moment to moment, we see and describe micro mini pieces of a second.
The easiest example for people is what we see in movies. Where the car flips in a car chase, for example, and we see the car twisting through the air, the garbage from the floorboard falling against the driver, widening of eyes, opening of the mouth to scream, etc, before the speed picks back up. Micro beats. We also use it in Romance. The parting of lips, the bat of an eye, a swallow, the light brush of their fingers against your skin, the feel of their breath against you. Micro beats. It’s what makes a battle scene perfection, the first kiss stomach fluttering, the chase scene nail biting. They add tension, improve your pacing and leave your reader on the edge of their seat.
Beats and micro beats apply to EVERY genre. All writers and hopeful writers can learn from this discussion.
